New Year, New Start!

Happy New Year and all that gumph. Since it’s 2011 and I now am the proud owner of an awesome new Flip HD camera (thanks so much Faridah! x), I thought it would be a good time to resurrect my much loved (by me at least) live video blog Strike A Chord UK.

So expect far more frequently updated live videos of all the best UK punk and hardcore bands from the DIY circuit for your enjoyment! I'll post a dozen or so videos I have from the last three or four months of 2010 that I’ve yet to post too.

I love how into it Rooftops are on this video. Blasting out their passionate post-hardcore punk, they're a great live band. Hailing from London/Bristol they've only got a couple of releases but hopefully there's more on the way soon.

Yes, it's another long overdue update! Right, I'm going to write less and try to update more. Honest. Anyway, thanks to Greg and Cara for the first Punk N Bowl in Bristol. It was another awesome day with the creme de la creme (that's right!) of the UK punk scene. Here's a few of the highlights...

Dividers are a new(ish) band from Swansea and this new song (I think it's from an upcoming split) shows they've got a bright future. If you're into the likes of Get Bent and Latterman then you'll love them.

This track isn't from it but they've got a great demo available to download from their MySpace and you can buy it on CD or tape from them at shows too (the former with a slow lorris on and the latter a pug. That's win, win).

Calvinball have become one of the UK punk scene's favourite gruff punk bands and they haven't let the fact that they live in different places now stop them releasing great records and playing loads of gigs. This headline slot at the Fighting Cocks was the last show of their UK tour with Leagues Apart and Cynics and had a typical Calvinball party atmosphere!

This song is taken (I think) from the upcoming split 7" with Madison Bloodbath, out soon on All In Vinyl.

First off, sorry you can't really hear any guitar here. Don't know why. It's obvious that Bangers had been on tour for a few weeks in Europe, they've got ridiculously tight and even more awesome. This was their first show with Good Luck and this opening song set the tone for the night with band and crowd going off. Amazing.

The new EP from The Don Ramos Players shows the band evolving and spreading their wings and this sprawling, atmospheric track is the perfect example of that. Bringing to mind Small Brown Bike, it's a powerful post-hardcore track. With their new line-up (Lloyd shifting from drums to guitar/vocals and Addy from Bastad! Rats! joining as their new sticksman)and a denser sound, their live sound is more impressive than ever.

Okay, so I've already filmed this song and I did film another one too but I deleted it by accident so pipe down. Anyway, this song, which they opened with, is a belter! Featuring ex-members of The Steal and influenced by everything from Osker and The Bouncing Souls to Guildford Heat and The West Wing, their hardcore-infused pop punk is a damn good time. They're playing some shows with Off With Their Heads then are off to play The Fest in Florida in October. Party!

This song is going to be (I'm pretty sure) on their upcoming debut 10" EP, due out on Chunksaah in September. Can't wait!

WELL WISHER Party Emotional

Well Wisher are a band from Manchester that I think have been going for a bit but I've only heard of since my friend Sean joined them on bass. They play energetic and intricate emo punk that's stunning live and, in fact, is quite well described by the name of this song. This was my (and quite a few people I know) first time seeing them and I was really impressed. The way all the band seem to shout and give it everything is pretty powerful. They've been in a load of other bands but now Well Wisher are set to become one of your new favourites. Just check it out!

This song is unreleased but the band have a couple of 7"s (and next year a 12") on the way.

It's the title track of his EP but it's not on his EP. Weird. Pure Giles. Love him. This is a great acoustic punk song. He said of the song:

"Where I used to live there was a Royal Mail at the end of my road which is where I used to meet Tom Hawes to skating in Waitrose carpark and chat shit."

Bromantic. This song is unreleased but already seems to be a live favourite.

First up, thanks so much to Dividers and Angela (who put on this awesome show - check out Poprocks And Coke shows) for getting this exciting new band over to Kingston so quickly. One of the best new bands I've heard for a while, this song is a big sing-along with shared vocals, awesome guitar and bass lines, a perfectly timed 'woo!' and getting Scott up in the air crowdsurfing while playing guitar! This Swansea quartet all seem like really great dudes too and partied hard at the New Noise club night with us after the show. Fun times! Someone called Ben apparently described them as "Get Bent meets Gavin and Stacey". That is brilliant... as was their Get Bent cover! Roll on Punk N' Bowl 5 in Bristol next weekend!

The Salford party punks are clearly loving playing in Kingston, but then it seems that they love playing full stop. What more can I say? In my eyes, this song is a UK punk future classic. I hope that makes sense. A rousing song that tells it like it is and was the thrilling highlight of The Elite's triumphant 2004 debut EP 'Security?', anyone who has seen Dauntless (especially in their hometown of Leeds at the much missed Out Of Spite festival) numerous times can probably understand why I love this song. Everyone else down the front at this gig probably feels exactly the same, if the air punching and singing is anything to go by. It's punchy and the dual vocals are amazing. Also, it makes me want to grab Mike and sing every word in his ear...

This song is taken from the EP 'Security?', which was released through Plan-It-X but is now out of print. It was awesome. Hopefully Steve can get it up as a download on his This Music Is My Life blog!

Featuring members of The Arteries switching instruments and the legend that is Pugs on bass, Ssssnakes are Descendents, Dead Milkmen and The Marked Men lovin' garage/pop punk straight outta Swansea! This was the last song of an energetic set that included a song dedicated to Steve called 'Microphone Head', a summer 'hit' called 'Pina Colada' (a video to be posted in the near future) and lots of leaping around. Jamie clearly loves taking on the frontman role and this song - full of microphone eating, crowd surfing and Steve helping out with vocals - shows the fun and chaos of their set. Fuck this place, this place sucks!

This song is probably from their split CD with Bangers but you can't get it anymore. Everything sucks. Apparently their debut LP is on the way very soon...

Bristol's finest hit Kingston to support the mighty Good Luck, along with The Dauntless Elite and Ssssnakes, making it one of Steve's best gigs to date. Getting the night off to an anthemic start, the three-piece blasted through their Discount-esque tunes and were clearly having fun.

Will, the singer of OTDH, has strong views on bands progressing and making every release different and I think that's pretty cool. Before this song he explains this and tells the crowd that lyrically it's about "the awkwardness of breaking up with your girlfriend", admitting it's "a bit of an emo song". It's in the vein of Lifetime and early Saves The Day (who they covered to finish their set!) though, so it's all good.

A new song that shows that they're determined to power through and keep changing, it's an exciting glimpse of what's to come. Catch them on tour for the next couple of months (see the MySpace for the gig listings), buy one of their awesome new Bill Murray t-shirts and ask Will about Deadly Circus Fire.

Having taken the summer to concentrate on finishing uni (in some cases) and writing and recently recording their eagerly anticipated second full-length (in all cases), Wales' finest are back and we were so excited to have them playing at ES. Safe to say it was one hell of a party, as always with Arteries gigs, and much singing, dancing and crowd surfing was had. Blasting through three new songs, it sounds like they're becoming more varied and drawing on a wide range of influences - a good thing for sure. Mixing an AC/DC riff with hardcore energy, as Miles yells, "I'm never gonna crack!", it's a beast. I can't wait to hear the new record. Lets just hope that Jamie doesn't launch the mic stand at anyone next time!

It's taken from the upcoming second album, 'Dead Sea', that the band are hoping to have out in time for their US tour in October.

Featuring plenty of ex-members and with a couple of releases under their belts already, it's good to have Don Ramos back. Their first album came out in 2007 but now they're back and their sound is a bit more post-hardcore, more varied and a little darker in my opinion. Anyway, it was cool to have them play ES and with Lloyd stepping out from behind the drumkit to thicken up their sound by adding a second guitar, with Addy (also of Bastad! Rats!) joining as their new tubthumper, they're sounding better than ever.

This song is from the Southern band's new EP, 'History And Geography', hopefully available soon through the band's own BH9! Records.

One of London's finest punk bands (even if Josh does joke then admit that they're not the best band in the world. Everyone knows that's Huey Lewis And The News, right?), A,IHN just seem to get better and better every time I see them. This gig was free and was a total blast, with the guys treating us to a couple of new songs, including this one. It's typically uplifting, sing-along stuff. The angle may not have been the best to film from on reflection but I've always thought that the back of Josh's head is underrated. Enjoy!

This song is as-yet untitled and, according to vocalist/guitarist (on the far side) Dan, "it's still in the works a bit at the moment!" Well, it's sounding pretty damn awesome at the moment (especially how it builds to an epic instrumental crescendo) so hopefully it'll be on a new release soon.

Neil Sutherland is a treat for any fans of uplifting anthemic folk punk and this song is a belter, even though it's more about how high streets seem to be becoming more and more homogenized. His story telling, passionate songs and infectious choruses deserve your attention, especially if you like Defiance, Ohio or Apologies, I Have None. On this tour, Neil's friends included PJ impressing everyone with his drumming (also of PJ & Gaby, Rooftops and A,IHN) and Kyle (also of imadethismistake) on bass. Not even a blown guitar head could stop the fun for long!

This song is taken from Neil's 2008 album 'Build Our Own', his first release which was full band rather than acoustic.

Porches are one of about five bands (including Serf Combat and Wegrowbeards) that the awesome bearded party dude Fun Alf is playing in at the moment. He's the dude singing and playing bass. If you love Dillinger Four, The Lawrence Arms, partying, burritos, pandas and The Fest, then you're going to enjoy the hell out of this. This is sing-along gruff pop punk with great male/female vocals and plenty of energy, not to mention a title with a nod to the O Pioneers!!! song 'Punknews Is Stoked'. Here's to the good times - Punktastic should be stoked!

They've just recorded a 4-track EP and this is from it. It's out July 27th on Alf's BooFrod Records!

Consisting of former members of a number of local bands, Leeds punks The Mags have been going since 2007. This song was pretty awesome because it reminded me of new Dead To Me, as well as bits of The Clash and Rancid. A good groove-laden reggae punk track for summer. Fun.

The three-piece have been in the studio over summer recording their second album but this tune is taken from last year's debut full-length 'Pay The Crimes', out now on Boss Tuneage.

MILLOY Spiders

Supporting the mighty Hot Water Music, Wakefield gruff punk heroes Milloy were on fine form. With Beefy having won tickets for the World Cup in South Africa, Joe Maples (ex-Pylon) came to the rescue and did a spot on job filling in. It was a great night and it was cool to hear them play some oldies like this for my friends and I to holler along to... even if it was weird that I wasn't singing it with Mike Hemsley. Wish you were there dude. Oh and enjoy my 'Woo!' - it summed up exactly how I felt.

Sorry I missed the start of it, had a bit of camera trouble. This song is the opener from the incredible 2002 EP 'Belt Up'. If you've only got the two albums (or even if you haven't) you should pick this EP up if you love Hot Water Music, Leatherface or Bangers. I don't know if you can get it anymore but try messaging the band. Yeah.

Wow, has it really been this long since I've posted on Strike A Chord UK? Sorry! I've no excuse, I've still been going to gigs but just haven't got around to posting the results. Lame. Anyway, I'm back from my accidental summer holiday away from the blog and there'll be plenty of new updates to come. So, please comment away, follow the blog and spread the word. Cheers big ears.

This performance was from when Cynics (aka the loveable sex pest Giles Bidder) supported the amazing Laura Stevenson at South Of The Border and he was awesome as always. In fact, this was probably one of his best performances to date. I think it may have something to do with the snappy new hat (which I presume is what sealed his 'Shutter Island' hot scoop US trip). If you're a fan of early acoustic Against Me!/Tom Gabel, Frank Turner and/or other acoustic punk troubadour types then Cynics could be for you.

The video is of Cynics' cover of the Paint It Black favourite - a version that's been given the seal of approval by Mr. Dan Yemin himself. High praise indeed. Bonus points go to Minty who you can hear busting out some great backing vocals towards the end. Bro down.

The Falmouth three-piece are just heading out on a seven week tour with Philadelphia's Dirty Tactics. They're touring the UK then are heading over to Europe and are currently doing the band full time. As ever, they were awesome and this new song was another driving track that made you want to pump your fist in the air and sing along (something Giles, Marty and I were doing to most of their songs and having a blast!). If you like ALL, Iron Chic, Osker and Kid Dynamite (and British basketball!) then you might well love these guys. It's still early days but I'm really excited to hear their demo when it's out. It's sad to see this London melodic hardcore band split (especially as they're good friends) but the band had run its course. What better way to give it a send off though than with a supporting slot with A Wilhelm Scream - one of their influences. It was a great night, with the Scores boys on fine form and having more fun than they have for a while. After this, a man triangle (human pyramid), crowd surfing, free t-shirts and guitarist Alex's costume change followed. Thanks for all the fun times and sing-alongs guys!

The new band formed by Mark and Dave from The Steal combines that band's much-loved energy and passion with more melodic influences such as ALL and Osker. Throw in some British Basketball League love and you have a band that's a hell of a lot of fun live. Supporting Alkaline Trio (who played a horrific acoustic set) at the New Slang club night, they may still be quite new but they showed exactly why we should be excited.

This song (which vocalist Mark said was tentatively titled this and joked about how it was about French toilets, after his recent cycling trip I presume) is slightly slower than many of their songs, making it pretty damn cool. Dave's guitar lead comes out just as he's about to lay down that awesome guitar line but it's a catchy and cool song. I hope it'll be on their upcoming demo (after all, Dave does say it's the best one at the start of the video!)

Following Austin Lucas' set, it was great to have Wakefield's finest back down south again. And we were in for a treat, with the quintet playing a couple of tracks from their early EPs (including 'Astro Zero') that I haven't seen them play in years. Amazing. Sadly, I was going crazy when they were playing those so I didn't catch them but this classic is another fan favourite that Dan, Marty, Jam, myself and many more had a good sing along to. The perfect way to end an incredible weekend of K Fest. Roll on K Fest 4!

The Portsmouth trio returned to Kingston armed with some new songs and Tim's sharp new hairdo, not to mention an artificial sun shining down on them it seems (watch the video). They were definitely the best I've seen them in a while and reminding me why they were so much fun in the first place. Their MySpace says they're "currently knuckling down to finish our album". About bloody time too! Really looking forward to hear the new record and you should be too!

This is obviously quite a personal song for frontman Tim as, as he explains before they play it, it's about his friend Spencer who's in the Afghanistan and who he obviously wants to get home safe. I think this song is going to be on their long-awaited second album, the follow-up to 2006's 'Shake Up' (out now on Household Name).

The Sheffield gruff punks were a man down (drummer Connor had an injured wrist I think) but thankfully Josh from Apologies, I Have None saved the day. He did a brilliant job filling in too and they played with as much raw passion as ever. This track has a ridiculously catchy guitar line and some awesome dual vocals. What more could you want?

So you may know El from her playing acoustic country folk songs in the band Livers And Lungs (or maybe from Southsea DIY) but the Portsmouth singer-songwriter is a powerful solo artist too. K Fest was the end of her tour with Austin Lucas (who said "if you don't like El Morgan you're a dickhead". Classic.) and she wowed the crowd with her heartfelt, honest songs and soaring vocals. Come play Kingston/London again soon please El.

I think this song is probably on the CD that she had for sale with her but sadly I had already spent the last of my money on a couple of 7"s so I couldn't get it this time. I think I'll message her about getting one though and you should do the same!

Another incredible new band that everyone should check out! There really wasn't a single bad band at K Fest this year and I loved everyone but these guys were definitely one of the highlights for me. Hailing from Norwich, the three-piece's brand (wahey!) of fun indie punk tunes about working in offices are catchy and refreshingly different to most bands around at the moment. Plus, before they even start this brilliant set closer, Carl gives a mighty thumbs up and Jem clarifies, "we are... proud". Bonus points.

Having seen Big City Plan at last year's K Fest, the Birmingham four-piece have come a hell of a long way and sound amazing today. I really liked them before but the few new songs they played, including this one, are a definite step up and I can't wait to hear them recorded. Consisting of former members of Shermer and Redcarpetrobots, Big City Plan are set to make their mark when they unleash these new tracks and are an impressive live act. Made up of two guys from Brighton and two from London, who have played in bands such as Small Mercies, Bastion and Cardinal Fink, The Dead Beat are an exciting new rock 'n' roll hardcore punk band. Influenced by the likes of The Bronx, Hot Snakes, Fugazi and Paint It Black, their songs are heavy but catchy and the guitar line in this opening song from their blistering K Fest set sees Tony lay down one hell of an infectious guitar line. You need to see them. Oh and the lost property comment from Dan before they start was because Antonio found a cable in his bag and told the crowd. Great music and helpful dudes!

Giles was on fine form at K Fest and with his new semi-acoustic ('semi', haha) resulting in shouts of "sell out!", it was a typically fun set. The former F-Bats member turned folk punk troubadour type has honed his skills to become one of the most exciting solo artists around at the moment I think. Not bad for a giant punk baby!

First off, a huge apology to the awesome Serf Combat (myspace.com/serfcombat). I was working late and only got to the Cocks towards the end of your set, by which point the room was already too full to get to a good place to film from. I'll catch you next time for sure guys.

After Serf Combat, who ruled as always, were Brighton pop punks The Hotlines. I think I've seen them once before and I wasn't too impressed but I was happy to be proved completely wrong as they blasted through an uplifting set of infectious pop punk with nods to the likes of The Ramones and The Queers, with an added surf twist and Beach Boys influence infused in there too. The four-piece released their self-titled album last year on Devils Jukebox. They've also got a couple of split 7"s out with Italy's Radio Days and one of their influences, The Queers.

As far as I can tell from their releases to date, this song is unreleased. Hopefully it won't be for much longer!

Playing Dave and my club night this month was this young band of garage hardcore punks from London town. Rory and Tommy were great frontmen, running around the place and generally going crazy. They're rough around the edges for sure (they probably like it that way!) but this is promising stuff. I'm really looking forward to catching them live again soon and hope they'll release a record soon to follow up their upcoming tape. Check out the next Everything Sucks club night, hopefully with Calvinball playing, and with Dave and I playing lots of awesome punk and hardcore on Friday June 18th.

Although it was really weird to be in such a 'trendy' venue for a great gig, the bands were awesome, even if there were too many bobble hats and 'taches around (and I'm just talking about Sauna Youth. Way-oh!!!) Joking aside, these guys are Rich and Lindsay from The Steal (the other half going on to form Pacer), joined by Rezza of The Cut Ups and some dude (sorry!) on bass. Anyway, they're pretty damn awesome live as you can see. This was my first time seeing them and Rich makes the most of not playing an instrument in Sauna Youth by, well, getting involved. Expect the unexpected! Influenced by the likes of the Ramones, the Buzzcocks and Swell Maps, it's an arty garage punk party.

This Norwich post-hardcore punk trio may describe themselves as 'grog punk' but they're more interesting than that gives them credit for. Striking some kind of middle ground between two of their influences - Hot Water Music and Fugazi - and with a sound similar to Above Them, this was the first time I saw them and I was impressed. Hopefully they'll be back around this neck of the woods again sometime soon.

'Spitting Teeth' is on the Sea Shepherd Benefit 7", out now on Happy Days. It's a split with three other great bands - Rooftops, Leagues Apart and Sammy's Fatal Mistake (with one song from each). It's for a good cause too so pick up a copy and give it a spin!

It was fantastic to see Leeds' finest back down south and playing a set that mixed early material with brand new, unrecorded songs. I've filmed a new song too so I'll post that in the near future but, for now, here's a rare oldie for you. More cowbell! The Dauntless Elite play the kind of gruff, melodic punk that'll have you singing every word and shredding your voice... while loving every second. I'm really excited for them to record and play more soon. Fingers crossed. A perfect Punk N Bowl band.

I'm not posting any Leatherface videos because of 'the incident' where Frankie Stubbs punched someone and put a bit of a dampener on the day. However, I want to focus on the amazing bands, food, bowling, friends and good times.

While not really keeping with the kind of music I normally cover on Strike A Chord UK, I thought I'd put Liverpool crossover thrashers SSS (it stands for Short Sharp Shock) on here anyway because the song has an awesome name and they didn't hold back. Influenced by the likes of S.O.D., Negative Approach and Suicidal Tendencies, they certainly tore it up at Punk N Bowl and unapologetically, along with Hammers, added a ripping dose of metal-loving to the day. As frontman Foxy stalked the floor and their riffs cut through the air, they gave Punk N Bowl a good thrashing!

Okay, so you probably know the score with Ponty favourites 'Buv 'Um. With driving rhythms and huge anthems (just check out the sing-along to this very tune!), they're one of the most exciting live bands on the UK punk scene at the moment, even with little mistakes at the start of their songs! With a huge riff and emotional vocals, this is a passionate and powerful song. Check out the singing from the crowd on the bridge too. Wow, this was definitely some of the loudest crowd participation at Punk N Bowl! Great band.

Influenced by the likes of Tragedy, Baroness and Neurosis and taking their name from a song by The Holy Mountain, fans of d-beat, crust and hardcore will enjoy the relentless brutality of this Manchester three-piece. They sure do make one hell of a noise for a trio and you can't help but be impressed. I know Kev was. An impressive force live, they're as unstoppable with recording too, having already put out several cassettes and records and with loads more (including an LP in late 2010/early 2011) planned. They're also heading out to tour mainland Europe in June/July. Bring the noise!

I'll keep it brief because there's plenty of videos and I've spoken about most of these on previous Strike A Chord UK entries. I got a new camera for this too so the sound is a bit better. Bastad! Rats! are from Basingstoke and are gruff, anthemic fun for fans of Rancid and the Bouncing Souls. Certain members can also take a punch and still have a brilliant night. Legends.

This song hasn't been recorded yet as far as I know but it has a killer drumroll at the start and plenty of 'woah' sing-along moments. Sounds like someone gets a strike just as Addy is introducing the song too. A great way to start Punk N Bowl!

I've probably already mentioned this but Apologies have gone and got awesome. Becoming a full band, with founding vocalists/guitarists Dan and Josh adding their friends PJ (bass, also of PJ & Gaby, Rooftops and Neil Sutherland's band) and Joe (drums) to the fold. The result is a sound that's urgent, powerful and anthemic and an energetic and passionate live show. With a couple of releases, I can't wait for them to record an album, which I think I heard is their next plan.

This energetic track (one of my favourite Apologies songs to date) is taken from the four-piece's new two-track 7", which comes with an accompanying CD and a build-it-yourself card rat or owl. Porches features Fun Alf (drummer of Serf Combat and Wegrowbeards) getting off the stool and taking up vocals/bass duties, Iona on vocals/guitar and Luke pounding the living shit out of the drums! They're a new band and this was the first song of their first gig. Hence Iona's unimpressed look at me filming it. Sorry! Thanks to Steve for being their director too. Quiet on the set! I can't remember who throws the horns but that's quite funny too. There's a bit of RVIVR or Fifth Hour Hero feel to it I reckon. Anyway, they were awesome, everyone enjoyed it and I can't wait to hear more from them.

Hailing from Sheffield, this four-piece play the kind of melodic gruff punk to get sweaty and lose your voice to. Featuring former/current members of bands such as Four Dumb Kids, Brutal Justice and The Gun Hill Dancers, they've honed their craft and are an impressive and fun band to see live. With a couple of split 7"s (with Orphan Choir and Above Them) and now a full-length under their belts, here's hoping The Amistad make the trip down south again soon to play their intelligent, northern humour-filled anthems. Fans of Milloy and The Leif Ericsson should enjoy these guys.

Probably my favourite start to a SAC video yet - "wow, that's bloody loud" from Mike. The Mags have made a name for themselves for their gritty yet melodic punk sing-alongs. Having played in Leeds bands for years, the three-piece includes former members of the likes of Eighty-Six and Buzzkill, so it's no surprise that they know how to pen an infectious tune. Fans of the old school, street sounds meets pop punk of the Bouncing Souls and Rancid will enjoy these guys. Having been a band since 2006, the Clash are another obvious influence on their irrepressible sound. Catch them playing shows up north in the next couple of months, they'll no doubt live up to their name.

This Durham three-piece (named after the first and only pro footballer to identify himself as gay) are a charismatic and fun bunch who play scrappy and anthemic tunes, with an urgency pulsing through each song. The dual vocals and big sing-along melodies make Fashanu so damn addictive. Somewhat of a hidden gem, this storming show on their UK tour with Imperial Can and fellow north-eastern types ONSIND is hopefully the start of more tours for them. Please play down south more please Jonathan, Kate and Gary!

Playing the kind of venue that's more often hosting drug-addled twats such as Pete Doherty (instead of this one! Way-oh! Jokes Giles, love you), London-based acoustic punk Cynics (Giles Bidder to his friends) was really impressive opening for Failures' Union. It's straight from the heart anthemic stuff and Giles is a brilliant dude (you may remember him from the brass section of F-Bats) so catch him live soon at a number of shows, including K Fest and Southsea Fest.

Sporting a beautiful new semi-acoustic (nice semi) guitar, he bust out 'the hit' to close with. A song about the friends he toured with and how much they mean to him, it's a big sing-along. Giles explains,

"I played a show in Peterborough that F-Bats were originally supposed to play. That night I partied with the other dudes playing the show. It was their first date on their tour and they invited me for the rest of it. 'Hey mum, uhh I met some guys in a town north of the Watford Gap and I won't be home for a week'."

Making guitarist Luke's (the one on the right) life complete by supporting The Lawrence Arms, this was also probably my favourite BTH show I've seen. The Brighton five-piece were on fine form and new songs such as this show why we've got a lot to look forward to with their upcoming split 7"s (with Spraynard, Solutions and Cutting Class). However, when this exhilirating and upbeat anthem will see the light of day on wax is up in the air a bit at the moment, as vocalist/bassist Jay explains.

"In theory this is going to be on a split 7" with Cutting Class, but with them breaking up, I'm not sure if it's still coming out."

Easily the biggest show I've filmed a band at so far for Strike A Chord UK (sell out! etc.), this show was headlined by their labelmate Frank Turner. Plymouth's finest country punk rockers have earned their position on this big stage, having blown away fans with their ear-shatteringly loud rocking songs in pubs around the countries for a few years and toured the UK and Europe with the likes of their good friends Bangers. Thankfully, they seemed totally at home in these large surroundings and blasted through this and plenty of other fan favourites with power and passion. Congratulations to the guys for such a stunning performance, with which they surely won over plenty of new fans. Catch frontman Darren Johns playing solo shows tour with Austin Lucas in May.

I was pretty pumped to be seeing The Arteries playing a hometown show and the driving punk rockers didn't let me down, with a set that featured a couple of new songs and some live favourites. I also managed to film this track, another ripper from their album that I somehow haven't filmed yet (yes, I know it's hard to believe!) Again, sorry for the poor sound but the big crowd sing-along 3/4 of the way through makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Incredible. Other highlights include frontman Miles headbanging like a winner, Steve and Trev singing along with their arms around each others' shoulders (love you guys) and Lotti crowd surfing.

Bangers and The Arteries are my two favourite UK bands at the moment so the fact they're touring together is great. The Cornish punk rock trio were on fine form in Swansea and the crowd from all over the UK went suitably ape shit to their anthemic and powerful songs. This is probably my favourite Bangers song and is a live favourite. Sorry for the poor sound quality but Roo, Andrew, Hamish and the audience were loving every second and I think that shows. Just watching it makes me smile. What a night. Hopefully I can come again someday (cringe).

So I finally made it to a Swansea show and I picked a belter. Chuck Ragan, The Arteries, Bangers and Liver And Lungs meant I loved every band on the bill. I was so excited about it all that I left my camera in my bag. Typical. Fortunately Angela stepped up and let me borrow her camera (thanks again mate!) and I filmed a few songs. First up was L&L.

"n. a person who dislikes or distrusts other people or mankind in general." But you wouldn't guess it from this upbeat, alt-country sing/stomp-along from this Southsea band, consisting of members/ex-members of You, Me And The Atom Bomb, Chillerton and NoComply. Anyway, the video starts with the band telling the crowd about a huge spider that fell on banjo player Jack during soundcheck, followed by Jack showing how big it was, then saying he wasn't talking about the spider. Textbook.

The song showcases Kelly and El's amazing voices and how well they work together, backed with the punk-infused country twang. Hell, this one had Chuck Ragan clapping throughout and hollering his approval. Now all that's left is for the band to finally release something! Or at least make those L&L official guns, painkillers and cat food...

Rising from the ashes of the much-loved hardcore heroes The Steal, Mark (vocals) and Dave (guitar) are back with Jaffa (drums) and Mike (bass) and their new band Pacer. Taking their name from a basketball term I think (Indiana Pacers anyone?), they're influenced by the likes of the Descendents, ALL, Bouncing Souls, Iron Chic, Guildford Heat/UK basketball and ridiculously awesome looking tubby funster cats! This was their first ever song at their first gig and they're clearly loving it, as was the crowd. I can't wait to the demo that's on the way too!

The Portsmouth trio are set to return with their long-awaited second album, the follow-up to 2006's 'Shake Up'. It's good to hear them back and, with some meaty riffs and raw anthems like this, I'm looking forward to hear what Tim, Hud and Dan offer up.

The Brighton four-piece played with all the passion and energy as they usually do and with several new songs in their set, all of which sounded anthemic and fun, they're getting better all the time. If you're a fan of Latterman and '90s emo then you need to check these guys out. Vocalist/bassist Jay jokes about the song title (calling it a range of other board games, including Monopoly and Kerplunk) before they burst into this energetic tune. Sharing mics for powerful vocal deliveries from all members, they were having a great time (despite Jay knocking over Luke's drink in this video!).

This song is about the long history of war and invasion in Afghanistan (looking back to 1841 forwards), with the closing line of "because there's no lessons learnt, but the game still goes on." Plus, they have Fun Alf (Jedward's Uncle?) on drums/vocals and on their t-shirts. Nice.

Having gone from couple PJ & Gaby playing acoustic folk punk in the vein of Ghost Mice to expanding out to a four-piece, with the addition of their good friends Josh and Dan from Apologies, I Have None, and becoming electric (think more like Defiance, Ohio and early Against Me!), I'm definitely a fan of their fuller sound. Despite the low vocals on this video, the passion of PJ & Gaby's dual vocals and catchy melodies as a full live band shines through. Enjoy!

Influenced by "every punk band that made us want mohawks, leather jackets and bullet belts when we were 15", fans of the likes of classic Rancid and The Bouncing Souls will enjoy the raucous tunes of this Bastingstoke four-piece. With beards and plenty of 'woahs', this is gruff sing-along punk at its most infectious! Apparently their vocalist/guitarist Adam Cardy has recently joined The Don Ramos Players as their new drummer, with Lloyd becoming their second guitarist. One for the trivia fans.

This song was the closer and is the one from their MySpace. I don't think it's been released on anything yet. Expect to hear plenty more from them and catch them live!

Now a two-piece, with vocalist/guitarist Vince joined by bassist Mike (also of Keeping Scores), this is socially/politically aware acoustic punk from London. I think this was their second gig as a two-piece (after playing a house party) and it was fun. I don't think the track has been recorded for any release as yet. Vince adds,

"The main lyric sums it up 'There's a million things more important than looks, like your outlook on life or your 10 favourite books.' It's about an alternative idea to what 'beauty' is, in rejection of mainstream culture's fetish for homogeneity and plasticity. It's about not just liking someone because they're 'hot' but for their ethics and approach to life. We're playing the North West all dayer on the 20th March in Harrow. Thanks."

ATTACK! VIPERS! Heart Attack In Reverse

Supporting The Hope Conspiracy, Portsmouth/Southsea's epic metallic hardcore heroes aired a couple of new tracks that they've been working on. As energetic, passionate and powerful as always they put on another awesome show. With the band laying down a track that's heavy yet has an infectious melodic guitar line and with frontman Joe stalking the darkness in front of the Underworld's stage, this song from the quartet's anticipated second album (due later this year) is as beautifully savage as you could hope for. Sorry, the video continues a little after the song finishes as Tom Hussey deceived me with his relentless basserising.

Before playing the song Joe explained that 'Reverse Heart Attack' was about wishing he knew what he knows and was doing what he does when he was 18 rather than almost 30. Time waits for no man... so bring on album number 2!

Another video from December and it's a corker. The Exeter punk rockers do it again with this rousing performance at the D4 gig in Bristol. This melodic indie punk trio from Norwich are a new band that are already causing quite a lot of excitement with their energetic and fun live shows and infectious sing-alongs. It's no wonder they were one of the highlights of Punk N Bowl, especially since it was the first time I'd seen them. Influenced by Huey Lewis And The News, smashing facial hair and a hatred of the drudgery of 9 to 5 jobs (a recurring theme in their songs), they're a band whose upbeat tunes and dual vocals are sure to win them plenty of friends this year. If you're a fan of DEVO, Descendents and/or Superchunk then these guys are for you. You can download five songs from here but not the track from this live video. This great Leeds/Sunderland punk supergroup (yeah, I went there!) features members/ex-members of the likes of The Dauntless Elite, The Mercury League and Fig. 4.0 and always put on an anthemic and passionate performance. Influenced by the likes of The Clash, Dillinger Four and Cock Sparrer, it's a powerful yet catchy sound. This sing-along shows how their old school/pop punk brilliance and three-way vocals are sure to have you grinning from ear to ear!

This new Bristol trio are one hell of a lot of fun and if you like Discount, Lemuria and Superchunk then they're right up your alley. With infectious hooks, big melodies and powerful vocals they're already causing excitement and I loved them when I caught them in their hometown recently. It's not often anymore that you see a band without having heard them and it was a good feeling to be simply blown away by their energy and tunes.

The three-piece of Louise, Michael and David will release their debut 7" through Specialist Subject in mid January, although this track will not feature on the recording. Also, catch them on tour around the UK in January.

LEATHERFACE Springtime

This is the smallest venue I've seen Leatherface in and it's probably the best I've seen them too. With a crowd who are understandably well up for the Sunderland gruff punk legends (after all, they don't make it down south too often), it was a blast from start to finish and frontman Frankie Stubbs was clearly loving every minute. His distinctive vocals, shuffle dancing and insanely infectious choruses made this easily one of the shows of the year. And yes, that's Duncan from Snuff on drums too. For anyone that doesn't know, Leatherface were a huge influence on Hot Water Music and the whole Gainesville, FL sound. Anyway, you pobably know so sorry, enough babble from me. Enjoy! There's a little bit of springtime in the back of my mind...

A favourite of mine, it's another video of Swansea's, actually one of the UK's, finest. This one is the first of a few videos I filmed a couple of months back when The Arteries sounded immense supporting The Flatliners. Initially I wasn't sure whether to just use this blog to post videos of small pub gigs but what the hell, right? The more the merrier. Storming show too.
